Tom Burckhardt is a pretty little liar

Burckchardt's work is not flat, even though these photographs tell you they are. He paints on cast plastic that he's poured into constructed molds.  He paint trompe l'oeil thumbtacks and folds of canvas on the sides of the paintings, so they are dimensional and object like but they're paintings too.

Gorky's Granddaughters conducts a studio visit in which Burckhardt discusses the process and philosophy behind the work for his show Pretty Little Liar at Tibor De Nagy Gallery.  John Yau's Cartoons of Paintings which aren't Cartoons After All for the Brooklyn Rail.
