Iconophilia and Mark Stone

Mark Stone's essay Iconophilia for Art Critical is a welcome struggle with what this discipline is/was/might be and the disciplines ongoing engagement with an identity crisis that some of us think is settled. That said, I enjoy hearing him work through his understanding of painting or more specifically abstract painting.

In the 21st Century the subject of our painting, especially abstraction, is not directed at the lives we live, or more specifically, at the world that we see and experience. Rather we abstract painters have been more concerned about eradicating visual confrontation with being/images.....We prefer the documentation of our painting processes over the depiction of visual things. .....The painting, the document, becomes a found object.
