Julia Morrisroe is a painter and associate professor at University of Florida. Looking at Painting began as a way to share my commitment to look and occasionally write about a wide variety of painting, contemporary and historical. In particular I'm looking at this as public commonplace book, a long term project to explore what I mean when I say 'thats a painting'.

If you missed this show, Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui, when it was in Brooklyn you have another chance, it just opened at the Bass Museum. Working with discarded aluminum bottle tops, seals and labels produced by local Nigerian distilleries, El Anatsui twists and pieces together massive tapestries that reference colonial relationships between Europe, Africa and the United States.
