Holbein's Minatures

Hans Holbein the Younger (German, 1497/98–1543). Margaret More (1505–1544), Wife of William Roper, 1535–36. Vellum laid on playing card; Diameter 1 3/4 in. (45 mm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Rogers Fund, 1950 (50.69.2)
The Met is opening the exhibition In Miniature this week, this sweet little Holbein miniature is about the size of my index finger. Holbein made about ten of the wee portrait paintings late in his life, they were meant to be worn like a jewel. We live in a time of pixels and nanotechnology, but it's hard to image working on anything this small, with such facility, prior to any of the technologies we rely on today.
