Pen and Ink Painting

Willem van de Velde I's The Battle of Terheide is a pen and ink painting almost four feet across. It's one of a commemorative series commissioned by a Dutch naval commander, van de Velde began the sketches on board the ship during the battle, early embedded reporting.  This work is new to me and I'm curious about the type of ink, the stabilization of the gessoed surface, and the varnish that seems to have prevented deterioration of the image. It's worked like an etching but it's a unique image...a curious middle ground,  I've read that a survey is in the works.
