Jacqueline Humphries: paintings and the machine

From a distance Jacqueline Humphries paintings read as almost monochromatic although some have a spray painted gestural line that makes them read like walls, like surfaces that have aged. Coming closer the surface of Humphries paintings read as code. Whether from a computer, a dot matrix printer or an IBM Selectric typewriter I'm not quite sure but whatever the source the layer upon layer of stenciled paint, the glitches where paint bleeds past its form and subtle shift of colors creates a visual ping pong game across the surface of her paintings. Her work evokes the machine but revels in its fallibility.
