Carol Vogel's provocatively titled article Painting Rebooted in the Sunday NYTimes about Wade Guyton's work left me wondering what exactly was rebooted? Rebooted...painting...lets get in to it, that could have been an interesting examination of painting, technologies, hand made, etc. Rebooting implies a fresh start, a rebuild, again a pretty rich idea, but it wasn't. Guyton and his work and the issues his work raises deserve more. I look forward to seeing the show. Update take a look at Roberta Smiths Dots, Stripes, Scans: Wade Guyton at Whitney ... review in todays NYT, she doesnt' bother with the whole 'reboot' notion, but does explain the process and surface of the work more fully.
