Figuration - Fischl and Saville
Bringing together work by Eric Fischl and Jenny Saville seems reason enough for celebration. The exhibition The Big Picture at New York Academy, curated by Peter Drake, frames the exhibition within the grand tradition of the French Academy. It's unnecessary and a little awkward, the work is splendid, which is no surprise, but putting Fischl and Saville among Mark Tansey and Neo Rauch and calling it a figure show is where it gets lost. Regardless they have some fine paintings and if the link between the artists is that they paint BIG, well then more power to them.
