Early Replication, Hendrik Jacobus Scholten
It's a curious little painting, The Princess of Orange visits the studio of Bartholomeus van der Helst. The premise is that the princess is viewing van der Helst's portrait of her, and behind van der Helst is his unfinished painting "Shooter Meal" one of his many popular group portraits. Yet of view of the scene, is represented by another painter, Hendrik Jacobus Scholten, and his representation of van der Helst's unfinished painting reads as if van der Helst himself is repeated, like a photo copy across the composition of a painting completed almost two hundred years earlier. I'll post some van der Helst paintings from the Rijks.
