The show's title "Listening to the Land" draws its name from the poem by Guyanese political activist and poet Martin Carter that digs into the tension of the landscape that arises between the sea and the forest. Sculpture, watercolors, and hand colored prints made for a beautifully crafted show which was up at the same time as Locke's installation "Gilt" on the facade of the Met Museum. Roberts work are another wave in the tsunami like trend of contemporary figuration. The paintings are inert, chromatically intense, and contain zoo like specimens that are lonely and disengaged. There is a lot to love about this work formally, but they left me wanting a lot more.</p><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; The exhibition, <i>In Search of the Miraculous</i>, at <a href="https://www.marlboroughgallery.com/" target="_blank">Marlborough</a> had other highlights but for now, I'm just sautéing in Burchfield's sunlight. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipfVqF5klFgzpMUZQ3LNvj9YuXJWvK5HGQCeMoWXCgXownTAz6JsWJOyOLNV4E_9QhNjKuBaZHwqjMfljrf9Jo6h48iVMyzPqC4vqcOr76PlnyKGEN4f_ufFWU__eh4JnrNCgGh_Wgb81JTjBYHevODZJRZ7G9cAFk2FKrBx1Rlp1zBS18Gba8JXRJdA/s4032/IMG_2276.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Charles Burchfield" border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipfVqF5klFgzpMUZQ3LNvj9YuXJWvK5HGQCeMoWXCgXownTAz6JsWJOyOLNV4E_9QhNjKuBaZHwqjMfljrf9Jo6h48iVMyzPqC4vqcOr76PlnyKGEN4f_ufFWU__eh4JnrNCgGh_Wgb81JTjBYHevODZJRZ7G9cAFk2FKrBx1Rlp1zBS18Gba8JXRJdA/w480-h640/IMG_2276.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>13 Ways of Looking at Paintinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04801594876227851978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4575283276202568658.post-40899160233453884822022-07-01T08:31:00.003-04:002022-07-01T08:31:32.630-04:00Judith Linhares, Banshee Sunrise at PPOW<p>The juicy and raw paintings of <a href="http://www.judithlinhares.com/index.html" target="_blank">Judith Linhares</a> are always refreshing as she plays freely between representation and abstraction. An upcoming survey at the <a href="https://dma.org/" target="_blank">Dallas Museum</a>, bringing together work from the ink paintings to the Blue series should prove an important investigation into his body of work.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; The exhibition was framed around accessibility as a means of participation and justice and included work from Felix Gonzalez Torres, Gerhard Richter and the like. Liza Sylvestre's video <i>Wha_ i_ I _old you a __ory in a language I _an _ear </i>floored me. I only have a still image but there is a video <a href="http://www.lizasylvestre.com/__a_-i_-i-_old-you-a-__ory-in-a-language-i-_an-_ear" target="_blank">here.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgM4QlR-f4mKU7d0VfOXt5o1hmDZR0elRBrUVGXQf9oMh1i5F2MAEVFiKTLrqaCP95Vbr8LHAKnoi94SXBkl2IcU54zhRXetfT13Q-GWwCidjSkpmfme5Bfiyggbyg0y_Rtj_gYti3FGhLWqHYaffMwn-AMK5FqtTKcHO-02CKa2EwjRYSNmG3xwBcoFQ=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgM4QlR-f4mKU7d0VfOXt5o1hmDZR0elRBrUVGXQf9oMh1i5F2MAEVFiKTLrqaCP95Vbr8LHAKnoi94SXBkl2IcU54zhRXetfT13Q-GWwCidjSkpmfme5Bfiyggbyg0y_Rtj_gYti3FGhLWqHYaffMwn-AMK5FqtTKcHO-02CKa2EwjRYSNmG3xwBcoFQ=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In the video Sylvestre recounts a memory about hearing, she slowly lost her hearing which started when she was six years old. She recounts her memory in a poem she has written, looking directly into the camera. She tells the story a second time, but only with the parts of the words she could hear. For Sylvestre both recordings sound the same but for non-Deaf people the second is a series of fragments. Other stand out works include an installation of the late <span style="text-align: center;">Derrick Alexis Coard's portraits of imaginary black men in his quest to understand African American masculinity. </span><span style="text-align: center;">Christine Sun Kim's diagrammatic maps of degrees of her rage at institutions, education and the art world where decision making is dominated by non-Deaf people. Emily Barker's</span><span style="text-align: center;">, <i>Death by 7865 Paper Cuts</i> documents and lays bare the exorbitant expense and stifling bureaucracy of the American health care enterprise in the US. </span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I keep looking at Velazquez's paintings though. The airbrushed background and impastoed foreground, coupled with the riotous color and the anthropomorphized landscape are joyous. These paintings are smart, steeped in his Taino culture, rich with mangroves, turtles and floating bordonua’s. Velazquez crafts a magically surreal vision of contemporary Puerto Rico.</div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjRA_5SXiPjATta18jCM1jcr0_EkjXiYCunk981nEJ5WAklrQiMQcp-zT_UNJKABdK_0iX8jexxjGYyg1jDWtIbrYDtgwmfvwDyZH4ZmYIWQeEyscRCy1jLjyHOFALEYeJTVVLOiTb56VXsi8cny-VxcClCY24uMO6a-XdNoZE6hNO7Rw-fEM0PkqFv2A=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjRA_5SXiPjATta18jCM1jcr0_EkjXiYCunk981nEJ5WAklrQiMQcp-zT_UNJKABdK_0iX8jexxjGYyg1jDWtIbrYDtgwmfvwDyZH4ZmYIWQeEyscRCy1jLjyHOFALEYeJTVVLOiTb56VXsi8cny-VxcClCY24uMO6a-XdNoZE6hNO7Rw-fEM0PkqFv2A=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Detail, Velazquez, Caguama</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhL26d2IK9N1VZRvk7BAhjWKocVh5yfV1WbMmI6rHQDvWcU0dsQPmX2K9yyhcnNYwft8IUygR_P8eJNUhTPndU8H6xMeUujhzjaSP_o7ZytM2nBatFjxkxQ-JY_rr-geIgajDGfCUjft0r2hKoYeIcnLj6TYm_Q1d9zHZv6UkdK4drV7y2ZEz6WDoGplg=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhL26d2IK9N1VZRvk7BAhjWKocVh5yfV1WbMmI6rHQDvWcU0dsQPmX2K9yyhcnNYwft8IUygR_P8eJNUhTPndU8H6xMeUujhzjaSP_o7ZytM2nBatFjxkxQ-JY_rr-geIgajDGfCUjft0r2hKoYeIcnLj6TYm_Q1d9zHZv6UkdK4drV7y2ZEz6WDoGplg=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Detail, Velazquez, Caguama</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div><br /></div>13 Ways of Looking at Paintinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04801594876227851978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4575283276202568658.post-640210386773752912021-12-08T11:48:00.000-05:002021-12-08T11:48:00.195-05:00Christina Quarles, more images!<p>Christina Nafziger reviewed the Christina Quarles show at <a href="https://mcachicago.org/Exhibitions/2020/Christina-Quarles" target="_blank">MCA Chicago</a> for <a href="https://art.newcity.com/2021/05/10/boundary-crossing-a-review-of-christina-quarles-at-the-mca/" target="_blank">New City</a> </p><p><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i></i></span></p><blockquote><i>The paintings of Christina Quarles are all about boundaries: the boundary as threshold, as surface, as canvas, as skin. The pandemic really put a wrench in my blog posts but thankfully this show is up until January. I found the early work most exciting, it took greater risks compositionally and with paint handling. As usual I have plenty of details so I'll spread this show out over several posts so we can all enjoy.</p><p><br /></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; She achieves so much with seemingly so little. The title of the show was "Motherhood". <a href="https://www.twocoatsofpaint.com/2021/05/katherine-bradford-consoled-and-consoler.html" target="_blank">Jacob Patrick Brooks</a> reviewed the show for <a href="https://www.twocoatsofpaint.com/2021/05/katherine-bradford-consoled-and-consoler.html" target="_blank">Two Coats of Paint </a>and equates Bradfords willingness to show the struggle of making a painting with a generosity, similar to the generosity depicted in many of the paintings. Brooks writes </p><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><p style="text-align: left;"><i><span style="background-color: white; color: #252324; font-family: Merriweather, serif;">What sets this show apart is that the people it depicts aren’t only awkward and funny, but also frail and unsure. Some are carried, while others appear to be consoling one another, clutching anyone close for support. Everyone seems humbled, as if there’s no longer any reason to gather around a bonfire or go for a swim.</span></i></p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; A professor introduced her as a radical artist painting what we don't see in the history of painting such as a nude pregnant woman or a male odalisque. I thought it was more radical that she was making figurative work at the time. This long overdue retrospective at the <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2021/alice-neel" target="_blank">Met </a>is open through the first of August. I'll post more images soon. <a href=" https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/01/arts/design/alice-neel-metropolitan-museum-review.html" target="_blank">Roberta Smith's review</a> in the Times details the significance of Neel's work as well as the fact that this exhibition is the <b>first time</b> the Tisch Galleries at the Met have presented the work of a female artist.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPapxwFicI9chnMpa_ksMBseJj1pxMOIGRQvNvQ7WA42WVFxUkfUMVIx698n3qAhAgSK1-XSWT-W4nxjdlVKieI5ktC-sA1erfW0zqo_kPEGfqIOneIjCvWh-lSv-hig4jsiL-u4-hOT5D/s4032/IMG_5857.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPapxwFicI9chnMpa_ksMBseJj1pxMOIGRQvNvQ7WA42WVFxUkfUMVIx698n3qAhAgSK1-XSWT-W4nxjdlVKieI5ktC-sA1erfW0zqo_kPEGfqIOneIjCvWh-lSv-hig4jsiL-u4-hOT5D/w480-h640/IMG_5857.JPG" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Alice Neel, Margaret Evans Pregnant, 1978 Oil on canvas</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKROPfW82BB3WTQaKk0mRMGOwrFYJ2pXP_1nhkxz3b2ornMZ8R-wMAhlh1xPaa2hGbuVNb7L0BdKV-IBe-PYcduRGK1YQ9zA5QA4D__QcsxvvOezQ0N9DKko91u7yjXNFBFXcatyoEpRjO/s4032/IMG_5908.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKROPfW82BB3WTQaKk0mRMGOwrFYJ2pXP_1nhkxz3b2ornMZ8R-wMAhlh1xPaa2hGbuVNb7L0BdKV-IBe-PYcduRGK1YQ9zA5QA4D__QcsxvvOezQ0N9DKko91u7yjXNFBFXcatyoEpRjO/w640-h480/IMG_5908.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Alice Neel, John Perreault, 1972 Oil on linen</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>13 Ways of Looking at Paintinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04801594876227851978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4575283276202568658.post-89337192535511747592021-06-01T11:30:00.001-04:002021-06-01T11:30:00.218-04:00Joan Semmel at Alexander Gray<p><span style="font-family: arial;">Joan Semmel's paintings continue her iconic interpretation of the self-nude at Alexander Gray. They were luminous, painterly, seductive images of an aging female body. I've included a lot of details to show her economy of marks and mastery of color. Erik La Prade interviewed Semmel for <a href="https://bombmagazine.org/articles/altering-the-perspective-joan-semmel-interviewed/" target="_blank">Bomb Magazine</a> in 2020 and asked her about the irony in her work as it related to the idealization of beauty. Semmel responded "<span style="background-color: white; font-style: italic;">Back then, I looked at the body, but I thought abstractly. I was formulating my images rather than just what I was seeing. That’s why, very often, those paintings were seen as landscapes. Formulating them abstractly gave them their dynamic power. </span><span style="background-color: white; font-style: italic;">Then there is the overlay of what I was trying to say in terms of myself as a woman, not just what the abstraction was, and that’s what you’re talking about in terms of the contradiction."</span></span></p><p><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span></i></p><blockquote><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="background-color: white;"></span></span></span></i></blockquote><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="background-color: white;
